This book is an excellent history of both an iconic company and the evolution of the art and science of photographing cars over a 45 year period. The second half is a fabulous collection of photographs selected by the two men who took them. Many of them were done to demonstrate the company’s expertise and were never used in ads. They reflect the history of the post war auto industry in the U.S. both from a product perspective and illustrate the popular cultural of the period.
The author did an excellent job of organizing and presenting the material. There is an absence of pointless anecdotes and instead a wealth of insightful comments, explanations, and observations.
I LOVE this book because I spent 1965-1989 working at automotive ad agencies in Detroit area. All the people mentioned are people I knew.
If you are a photographer anywhere, this will teach you some important things you don’t know. If you worked in advertising in Detroit during this period, you will enjoy the read and the wonderful photos.
If you live in Iowa and don’t care about photogaphy, forget it.
Ever wonder how automobiles get that perfect look each time in automobile advertisements? This book shows the history of the predominant leader in this specific photography assignment, Boulevard Photographic. Well written with focus on techniques and personal experiences by the men who created this photographic field.

I recently rediscovered this book, after buying it originally several years ago. I’m into cars more than photography. I absolutely love the many clear and interesting photos of lovely old cars. From the 50’s to the 80’s, with the bulk in the 60’s. Great book if you like old cars or old car ads.
